Jason Snead, Executive Director of Honest Elections Project Action, released the following statement:
“Alabama is the latest state to pass legislation that prohibits private donations to fund election expenses. In 2020, we saw the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg funnel his ‘Zuck Bucks’ through the non-profit Center for Tech and Civic Life. Analysis now shows that these funds were distributed with a clear partisan bias. Americans deserve to know their election system is impartial. I applaud Alabama legislators for passing HB 194, making it a misdemeanor for elected officials to accept donations or grants, like ‘Zuck Bucks.” This safeguard will ensure it is easy to vote and hard to cheat in Alabama. I encourage Governor Kay Ivey to sign this bill into law swiftly and position Alabama as a leader in election integrity.”
