Jason Snead, Executive Director of Honest Election Project Action:
“Mere days after the Honest Elections Project exposed the U.S. Alliance for Election Excellence as ‘Zuck Bucks 2.0,’ a partisan scheme to target and influence local election offices and administrators, Virginia Democrats are pushing a bill to open the Commonwealth to this group’s corrupting influence. Virginia lawmakers passed a bipartisan bill last year to ban private election funding. Now, Virginia Democrats are trying to roll that back. If they succeed, they will paint a target on Virginia’s back. The Commonwealth will see a spike in private funding and ‘dark money’ groups will start working behind the scenes to push partisan politics into the offices that run our elections.
“Elections are supposed to be free and accountable to voters. SB 1180 will harm public trust and confidence in elections. We should always be working to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat. This proposal by Virginia Democrats will do the exact opposite. All Virginians deserve elections they can trust, free from the corrupting influence of left-wing billionaires and ‘dark money’ special interests.”
